ECLECTASY, THE JK PROJECT - REVIEW

Bristol based songwriting duo John & Kevin bring together their eclectic taste in music to produce an entertaining album full of surprises from one track to the next. This debut album from The JK Project is essential listening for those with a varied taste in musical styles. Fans will be listening to Eclectasy again and again to pick up on the small details and nuances from this well put together collection of tunes.

The tone of the album is set right from the off with “I’m Gone” - featuring a 4 bar reggae breakdown which somehow doesn’t feel out of place in an upbeat, guitar driven opener. You can tell these guys aren’t afraid to push the boundaries and it absolutely works for them.

“Matagorda Bay” and “The Good Times Were To Come” follow before we take our first foray into the slightly wacky and extremely fun side of this songwriting duo with “I Hate My Neighbour”. John & Kevin bounce off each other so well in this novelty tune all about neighbours at war. The author enjoyed a good chuckle to this one and the chemistry these guys have really shines through here!

There are a number of special guests joining as part of this project. Darren Green provides some noteworthy drum programming moments and the pairs “long suffering partners” (their words!) Jan & Petra provide additional vocals on “Good Time” and “Would You Like It Hot” respectively. Mike Budd also provides artwork for many of the tunes.

The sheer variety of music on this album is truly amazing and really shows the passion The JK Project have for what they do. From Cuban Son Clave rhythms on “Spoilt Brat” to the heavy guitar and drum sounds on Prog Rock inspired “Sunrise On Europa”. A personal highlight would have to be “Disposable Celebrity” - a beautifully written tune with a catchy hook and fantastic vocal performances from both the guys.

Overall, Eclectasy is an album which shows off just what this songwriting duo are made of and this author cannot wait to hear more. The JK Project have released this as “an album for a worthy cause” - with proceeds from sales going towards raising money for good causes. An incredible gesture! Go out and buy this album, you will most certainly enjoy.
